A student who understands the mechanism of the reaction of metals with acids by electron transfer does not need to separately memorise every individual metal-acid reaction. If a student masters the principles of organic functional groups, he does not have to memorise each compound family separately. Memory is gained much more reliably from understanding than from mere repetition alone. Dr Anil Khare: In my opinion equation writing and calculations are the two areas where IGCSE Chemistry most clearly rewards systematic habit over intelligence and they are entirely trainable through the right kind of practice. Balancing equations involves knowing what is being balanced & why using reasoning and not pattern-matching. Mole calculations, percentage yield, concentration and empirical formula questions all follow predictable step sequences that become reliable through deliberate repetition with mark-scheme feedback after every attempt. Special sessions are devoted to calculation technique - developing step by step working habits where each stage of the method is explicitly shown throughout the working, as IGCSE Chemistry mark schemes award method marks for the working even if the final answer is wrong. Structured working is a skill which is rewarded and we develop this from our very first calculation session.
