One of the most interesting stories in Dubai is the story of Jumeirah Lakes Towers. JLT was originally designed as a freehold mixed-use development in the early 2000s, designed around three man-made lakes along the Sheikh Zayed Road corridor, and marketed primarily as a commercial development. What nobody fully anticipated was how quickly and organically it would transform into one of Dubai's most liveable residential communities. Today, with more than 80 towers, tens of thousands of people living in this area from all countries in the world, its own Metro station, a flourishing promenade of cafes and restaurants, and a lot of palpable neighbourhood energy that many larger planned communities don't have, JLT has become a destination of its own. Homeschooling via the British Council private candidate route is now an increasingly popular educational option for the internationally-minded, academically driven families that live there. Tutors.ae powered by Amourion's center at Office 2401, Fortune Tower, JLT sits at the heart of this community, thus making specialist IGCSE Chemistry support readily available.
Dr Anil Khare: Yes — and IGCSE Chemistry is truly one of the easier sciences to learn from the ground up; with a clear, step-by-step, specialist approach. Both the Cambridge and Edexcel syllabuses have a systematic introduction to Chemistry, and a student who has no previous experience of Chemistry but consistently works weekly and arranges his/her own study time can easily attain the examination standard in 12-14 months. The most important thing isn't the existing knowledge, but the quality of the preparation system behind it. At Tutors.ae powered by Amourion, we start every new Chemistry student with a clear syllabus map and introduce topics in the way that best builds understanding, e.g. atomic structure and bonding before reactions, reactions before calculations so that every new topic is introduced on a well laid foundations rather than a blank canvas.
Dr Anil Khare: The "memorisation reputation is real but significantly exaggerated and it damages students who approach the subject as a pure recall exercise. The best way to decrease the memory burden in the IGCSE Chemistry course is to develop an actual understanding of the concepts as opposed to facts. A student who understands the mechanism of the reaction of metals with acids by electron transfer does not need to separately memorise every individual metal-acid reaction. If a student masters the principles of organic functional groups, he does not have to memorise each compound family separately. Memory is gained much more reliably from understanding than from mere repetition alone. We have a strong philosophy at Amourion in teaching IGCSE Chemistry from the bottom up and students always tell us that once they understand the reasoning behind the subject, it becomes much easier to handle.
Dr Anil Khare: In my opinion equation writing and calculations are the two areas where IGCSE Chemistry most clearly rewards systematic habit over intelligence and they are entirely trainable through the right kind of practice. Balancing equations involves knowing what is being balanced & why using reasoning and not pattern-matching. Mole calculations, percentage yield, concentration and empirical formula questions all follow predictable step sequences that become reliable through deliberate repetition with mark-scheme feedback after every attempt. Special sessions are devoted to calculation technique - developing step by step working habits where each stage of the method is explicitly shown throughout the working, as IGCSE Chemistry mark schemes award method marks for the working even if the final answer is wrong. Structured working is a skill which is rewarded and we develop this from our very first calculation session.
Tutors.ae powered by Amourion at Office 2401, Fortune Tower, JLT offers specialist exam specific support in the community, with online sessions available throughout the UAE for students who cannot always attend in person.
