    Studies in language and literature

    As part of the Diploma Programme (DP), students can choose English language and literature or other languages available. The courses offer a broad range of texts that students learn to appreciate.

    Overall, IB Language and Literature consist of three courses:

    • Language A: literature, which is automatically available in 55 languages and, by special request, for any other that has sufficient written literature
    • Language A: language and literature, which is available in 17 languages.
    • Literature and performance, which is automatically available in English, and by special request in Spanish and French.

    Language A: Literature (SL/HL)

    This course introduces students to the analysis of literary texts in English. The course is organized into three areas of exploration and seven central concepts, and focuses on the study of literary works. They are put together for an all-encompassing perspective on different cultures, periods and literary forms. Students critically analyze their reading, and present the analysis through both oral and written examinations.

    Key features of the curriculum and assessment models

    • Higher-level – a minimum of 240 class hours; 13 works
    • Standard level – a minimum of 150 class hours; 9 works
    • Improved ability to do a thorough analysis and criticism of literary works
    • Students are evaluated through a blend of formal examination and oral and written coursework.
    • The formal examination comprises two essay papers, one requiring the analysis of a passage of unseen literary text, and the other comparative response to a question based on two works studied
    • HL students comply with a further written coursework requirement which consists of writing an essay (1200 – 1500 words) on one of the works studied

    Language A: Language and Literature (SL/HL)

    The language A: language and literature course in English is the study and interpretation of written and spoken texts from a wide range of literary forms and non-literary texts. The course is planned into three areas of exploration and seven central concepts, and focuses on the study of both literary or non-literary texts. The main aim is to hone the development of critical literacy.

    Key features of the curriculum and assessment models

    • Higher-level – a minimum of 240 class hours; 6 works
    • Standard level – a minimum of 150 class hours; 4 works
    • Students study a range of non-literary texts (advertisements, newspapers, journals, and so on)
    • Students develop the techniques needed for determining connections between cultures, societies, texts, and intentions behind writing them
    • Students are evaluated through a blend of formal examination and oral and written coursework
    • The examination comprises two essay papers, one requiring the analysis of the unseen literary and non-literary text, and the other a comparative response to a question based on two literary works they have studied
    • HL students comply with an additional written coursework requirement which consists of writing a 1200 – 1500-word essay on one of the works or bodies of work studied

    Literature and Performance (SL)

    The literature and performance course intends to explore the joining of literature and theatre. The core focus of the course is the collaboration between the literary skills of close reading, critical writing and discussion and the practical, aesthetic and symbolic elements of performance.

    Standard level study requires a minimum of 150 class hours and a minimum of five literary works must be studied, covering all the main literary genres. Students are evaluated through a blend of formal examination and oral and written coursework. The formal examination consists of two essay papers, one requiring the exploration of issues involved in dramatizing a novel, and the other a comparative response to poetry studied. Students also produce written coursework based on a critical analysis of a play they have studied and performed, a performance based on their transformation of literature studied, and an oral presentation
